Phuong My Chi, age 20: Moved out to live alone, opened a company and became President
At the age of 20, Phuong My Chi had many memorable milestones. She accepted to start over from zero with a new appearance, music and life.
I do not follow or imitate anyone!
- Temporarily putting aside the image of a "folk girl" to start from zero with a new music genre, how do you mentally prepare?
This year marks Phuong My Chi's 10th year of singing, and is also a memorable milestone. I want to step out of my comfort zone to try new music and a new image.
After 1 week of release, MVThe universe has youachieved good results with positive feedback. I consider this a sweet fruit, a motivation for myself and the team. I want people to call me Phuong My Chi, instead of "folk song girl", or "child singer". Everything is just the beginning but I have faith in the path I am taking.

Phuong My Chi pursues a new image at the age of 20. |
- A part of the audience assumes that you are a "copycat" or considers this a "step backwards" for Phuong My Chi. What do you say about this?
I expected mixed opinions when launching a product. It is natural for a newcomer to be compared and pressured. But if you are afraid and worried, you will be stuck in a rut and unable to do anything.
I want myself - as a young person - to be able to explore and experience a new role. My peers can absolutely choose this path if they feel it is suitable. This is a generational continuation, expressing the dream of making traditional music combined with modernity. I don't want people to use the words "imitate" or "follow" because that is not accurate.
- After 10 years of singing, what do you think about the past?
I am proud to have come a long way. From a girl who was passionate about music and wanted to hold a microphone to sing to satisfy her passion, I have had a life that is quite fulfilling in every aspect.
Of course, to get what I have now, I had to make a lot of sacrifices. I don't see it as a sacrifice or a loss because everything has its pros and cons. I am satisfied with my changes over time.

Phuong My Chi changed after 10 years of singing. |
- There was a time when netizens attacked and insulted your appearance. How do you feel about compliments and criticism now?
Unable to control other people's criticism or prejudice, artists must learn to accept opposing opinions, even if they are sad, they must put them aside. I have a carefree and adaptable personality, so I usually overcome them quite quickly. Respect, listen, and then choose whether to accept or not. With offensive opinions, there is no need to pay attention. If you sincerely give your opinion, I will learn from it and appreciate it.
If I were an introvert, I would be depressed.
- Phuong My Chi looks older and more mature in communication. Showbiz must have changed you a lot?
I think everyone grows up and can’t be naive forever. People often call Phuong My Chi a “child singer”, but in reality I’m 20 years old and have been singing for 10 years. I let things develop naturally and don’t intentionally act immature or naive.
Communication and behavior are things that must be learned throughout life. I am a sensitive person in relationships. Sometimes I accidentally say something carefree, others do not think anything of it but I am afraid they will be upset. Perhaps because of that reserved, thoughtful attitude, I look more mature.
Some of my brothers, sisters, friends and colleagues said that Chi was lucky to be the “youngest sister of showbiz”. In big and small events, everyone was always there to support me, maybe because I behaved nicely and respectfully enough to everyone.

- Does being the breadwinner of the family make you feel tired and stressed?
I take the initiative to take care of my parents and support my sister to some extent. Before, I didn't think too much about money or family burdens. It is the children's responsibility to take care of their parents.
I am very bad at calculating and managing money, but having my sister by my side, helping with income and expenses and taking care of future income, helps me feel less stressed and can just focus on my professional work.
- Moving out to live alone, opening a company as President, completely changing her style and appearance... Are these big milestones happening at the same time too much for a 20-year-old girl?
It is true that everything happened so quickly and unexpectedly that at first I could not fully adapt. Unstable emotions easily made me negative psychologically. When I could not do something, I felt helpless and useless. Even the smallest things made me emotional.
Luckily I am an extrovert so when I have sad things I usually share them with my sister and friends. If I were an introvert, I would have been depressed for a long time.
- How does it feel to have the freedom to start something new?
SongTwentyMs. My Tam's passage:“On the twentieth day you rushed into life/Life was strangely green at the age of twenty”, I really like it because I see similarities.
I never thought I would start a company, move out or start composing music… Everything was decided in a moment. Independence can be tiring and stressful, but in return, it brings a sense of freedom and inspiration to start many interesting things on the upcoming journey.

- How do you spend time on love?
Until now, Chi is still single, and has had a few crushes, but they were just fleeting feelings. Due to the nature of her job, she only interacted with people for a short time and did not have the opportunity to get to know them, so everything stopped at the level of affection.
This time, I want to devote all my time to work and soon to study. These things I can take the initiative but feelings are hard to talk about. I believe that the right time will come, no need to force myself. Hopefully one day I will announce it to everyone.(laugh).
