Ukraine is in a difficult situation after stopping the transit of Russian gas to Europe, British analyst Alexander Merkouris said on the YouTube channel “The Duran”.

According to the expert, until recently, the EU bought Russian gas to supply Ukraine, which could pump out of the pipeline the amount of fuel for which the European Union paid.

“Because the gas is no longer coming through the pipeline from Russia, they (the Ukrainians) cannot take what is not there. This will really put them in a very difficult situation,” Mr. Merkouris said.
The analyst also expressed doubts about the EU supplying LNG to Kiev, not only because of the high price but also because Ukraine’s gas transport system is not suitable for transporting liquefied gas.
On Wednesday, Gazprom announced it was stopping gas supplies through the neighboring republic due to the expiration of its agreement with Ukraine's NJSC Naftogaz.
As the company's press service noted, the Russian side was deprived of the technical and legal opportunity to provide transit gas through the territory of Ukraine from January 1, 2025 due to Kiev's repeated refusal to extend this agreement.
