Stratfor predicts Russia's growing power and continued divisions in the West. |
Stratfor believes that the election of Donald Trump as US President will allow for a "warming" in relations with Russia.
According to the author's analysis, the new US government may remove the three-year-old sanctions against Moscow. This will further increase Russia's influence in the former Soviet Union countries.
Divisions within the European Union also facilitate Russia's escape from the crisis caused by economic sanctions and low oil prices.
According to Stratfor, now “the odds are in Russia’s favor.” It is likely that the former Soviet republics will “reassess their stance toward the West”: Moldova’s new president, socialist Igor Dodon, will certainly make an effort to establish close economic ties with Moscow.
Georgia's stance on the breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia "has begun to soften". Ukraine is no longer confident of "unwavering support" from the West.
The Ukrainian government will change its attitude towards the Minsk agreements. Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are increasingly buying Russian weapons and training their armies with the help of Russian specialists.
According to the author, when the US has a new government and divisions within the EU increase, Russia will have the opportunity to "restore influence in many neighboring countries."
