(Baonghean.vn) - Western countries no longer see the Ukraine conflict as their own security issue. That is the statement of Jacob Kirkegaard - senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) when talking to Financial Times.

Specifically, the Financial Times quoted Mr. Kirkegaard as saying: “Ukraine is no longer special. It is no longer considered a national security issue of primary importance to the EU, NATO or the US. Because if it were, people would not play politics with it.”

Commenting on the situation surrounding the additional US and EU aid to Ukraine, Kirkegaard added: "It's a devaluation of Ukraine's war effort. There's no other way to put it, I think. And for Ukraine, it's a terrible situation."

According to this expert, "Moscow's strategic decision to try to outlast the West is working."

The Financial Times also noted that the US Senate rejected the White House's latest attempt to pass legislation authorizing $60 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine.

Next week, the EU leaders' summit will consider a proposal to provide 50 billion euros to Kiev based on a four-year support program.

“Without either of these packages being approved, Ukraine’s long-term financial security will be in doubt. Without both, the country’s future looks bleak,” the Financial Times predicted.
