According to RIA Novosti on April 14, an article in the Financial Times said that the trade war that US President Donald Trump declared against China is bound to fail. According to the author of the article, there are three reasons for this failure.

First, the Financial Times said that most countries now understand that the various economic arguments put forward by President Trump's advisers are just a formality. "As long as Mr Trump is in power, the US cannot be trusted, and no national leader wants to join him in his crusade against China," the article said.

The second reason for Mr. Trump's future failure is the dependence of US foreign policy on the government debt market.

“President Trump had to abandon the high tariffs after a backlash from the government debt market. So Trump lost his leverage in the trade negotiations. He cannot raise tariffs further because the treasury market will rebel again,” the article said.

The third reason is China.

“At first glance, China appears to be in a worse situation than the US: It has lost access to one of its largest export markets and appears to be diplomatically isolated. But in reality, it is well prepared to wage an economic war of attrition against the US,” the article stressed.

Beijing could replace demand from the US with demand from domestic consumers, the Financial Times explains: This is the policy that Chinese President Xi Jinping has chosen. Moreover, China can manage without importing goods from the US.

The article notes that five years of export controls have helped China achieve great success in producing goods without using American technology.

"If the goal of Donald Trump's new trade war with China is to force Beijing to submit to American power, the result will be disappointment and frustration," said the Financial Times.

After a series of moves in the trade war, the US's additional "mutual" reciprocal tariffs on Chinese goods have reached 145%, and China's tariffs on US goods have also reached 125%.
