Moments of silence after the trial of the father who took the life of his son
(Baonghean.vn) - Witnessing her husband being stabbed to death by his father made Vy Thi Le even more heartbroken. However, in court, she did not complain or blame her father-in-law but asked for a lighter sentence.
The father's moment of "anger and loss of reason"
In mid-May, for the first time, the whole family of Vi Dinh Hoa (61 years old, residing in Mau Duc commune, Con Cuong district) met together after nearly half a year apart, since the incident of the "cooking pot of skin and meat" case.
That morning, in addition to the defendant, there were also Hoa's wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. However, this was a tearful meeting when Hoa came to court as the defendant in a murder case, while the rest were both witnesses and relatives of the victims in the tragic case.
Five months earlier, on the evening of December 9, 2018, Vi Dinh Hoa had dinner with his wife and grandchildren. While eating, Hoa kept complaining about his wife, Lang Thi Nhung, refusing to bring in her son's clothes.

The story is simple, but with her abusive nature, Hoa punched Mrs. Nhung in the mouth. Feeling angry because her husband beat her in front of her children and grandchildren, Mrs. Nhung went into the inner room and cried.
At the same time, the second son Vi Dinh Tuyet (born in 1978) and his wife came to visit. Seeing his mother crying, Tuyet asked about everything and then blamed his parents for "living properly", leading to an argument between the two sides.
Fearing a fight, Ms. Le - Mr. Tuyet's wife, immediately advised her husband to leave. As soon as the couple's motorbike left the yard, Hoa threw a bowl of rice at his wife. Hearing the sound of the bowl breaking, Mr. Tuyet stopped his motorbike and went into the house to talk to his father. Seeing his son put his helmet down, Hoa immediately said: "Are you going to hit me?"
Tuyet replied that she would not hit her father but wanted to talk things out. Then, Hoa loudly scolded her son and said, “I will kill you.” As soon as she finished speaking, Vi Dinh Hoa went inside the house, took a knife and stabbed Tuyet in the chest.
The stabbing caused the son to die on the way to the emergency room. The forensic examination concluded that the victim died of respiratory failure and acute circulatory failure due to a wound that penetrated the left lung and heart.

When asked by the jury, "Why did you kill your child?", Vi Dinh Hoa replied, "I don't understand why you did that." Hoa stated that before committing the murder, he had had a few drinks but was not drunk.
Regarding the relationship between the defendant and the victim before the incident, Hoa stated that there were no significant conflicts between father and son. The defendant stated that when he learned of his son's death, he felt very regretful and heartbroken. The defendant did not intentionally kill his son and asked the court to consider a lenient sentence.
Choose to forgive
Nearly half a year has passed, but the pain of losing her husband has not yet subsided in the hearts of Ms. Le and her children. Attending this trial, she sat quietly next to her two sons. Every time she heard the defendant, who was also her father-in-law, recount the crime, she bowed her head, her face filled with pain.
Speaking in court, this woman shed tears many times. Between her husband on one side and her father-in-law on the other, she was in a difficult position. Then, she chose to forgive to ease the pain.
She said, the incident has already happened, the offender is not a stranger but the victim’s biological father and my father-in-law. Therefore, I do not request additional punishment, I ask the court to reduce the sentence for the defendant. The victim’s two children also do not ask the defendant to pay any compensation.

Sitting in the same row as Ms. Le and her children were Ms. Nhung and her two sons. Ms. Nhung attended the court in two capacities, as a relative of the victim and as the defendant's wife. Speaking in court, she repeatedly accused her husband of being drunk and beating her many times. Before committing the murder, Hoa had had two drinks that day.
However, in court, she did not ask for compensation for any losses, but asked for a lighter sentence for the defendant. “He is old, so I ask the court to consider a lighter sentence so that my husband has the opportunity to reunite with his children and grandchildren for the rest of his old age,” she said, not forgetting to apologize to her daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
During the deliberation, Hoa turned to apologize to his wife, children and daughter-in-law. Hearing the apology from her father-in-law, Ms. Le just kept silent, secretly wiping away her tears.
For the murder Vi Dinh Hoa was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The court ended, Ms. Le and Ms. Nhung silently watched the defendant being escorted to the van. Unlike other murder trials filled with hatred, in this trial they chose to forgive. That was the way to help the victim's relatives gradually ease their pain, and also to help the defendant see clearly his wrongdoings.
