Premier League - a different league

Conservative Premier League
In 2006, to ensure the health of players, FIFA ordered all major European leagues, including Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga, to be reduced to 18 teams from the 2007–08 season. But the Premier League responded by saying that Welsh clubs should have 20 teams if they were to compete in the English football league system. In fact, Swansea City are the first non-English club to play in the Premier League, and after their relegation last year, Cardiff City are the only Welsh club still playing in the league. There has been talk of Scottish and Irish clubs participating in the Premier League, but so far there has been no consensus.

In a bid to limit foreign players playing in the Premier League, the UK Immigration Department has tightened the rules for granting work permits to players from outside the European Union. A non-EU player can only be granted a work permit if he has played 75% of the 'A' matches he was selected for over a two-year period, and his country must have been ranked at least 70th on average in the FIFA rankings over the past two years.
