On January 14, European Union (EU) leaders affirmed the legality of their commitment not to use the "backstop" clause, which is intended to help ensure an open border between the British province of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the Brexit deal, to bind London to the bloc's rules.

In a letter to British Prime Minister Theresa May, European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker ruled out agreeing to any changes or inconsistencies with the deal. As for the “backstop” clause relating to the Republic of Ireland, the EU does not wish to see it come into force and will only apply it temporarily if absolutely necessary.

An Indonesian official said the black box voice recorder from the plane that crashed into the sea, killing 189 people in October 2018, has been found. The National Transportation Safety Committee has notified the ministry of the discovery of the black box, according to Indonesian Deputy Maritime Minister Ridwan Djamaluddin. He said that while searching for the black box, rescuers continued to find more body parts on the seabed.

A Lion Air Boeing 737-MAX 8 domestic flight from Jakarta crashed into the sea on October 29, killing all passengers and crew. Three days after the accident, rescuers found the black box that recorded the flight data.

However, finding the black box that records the audio is more difficult. The second black box is the cockpit voice recorder, which may contain information about the last conversations between the captain and co-pilot before the plane crashed.
