The Russian president did not disclose the content of the conversation, but the Elysee Palace confirmed that the two leaders discussed many issues in the Middle East, especially Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well as North Korea. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also participated in some of the discussions during the lunch.
Putin was the last foreign leader to arrive at the ceremony, quickly approaching Trump to shake his hand, then giving the US president a thumbs-up and a smile. "We agreed not to interfere with the host country's work schedule, so we will not hold any meetings in Paris at the request of France," the Russian president revealed before arriving at the ceremony.
Trump and Putin are expected to hold formal talks later this month at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides had not yet agreed on a schedule.
President Macron and 70 world leaders yesterday attended a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I at the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs Elysees in central Paris.
