"President Vladimir Putin considers the US airstrike on Syria to be an aggression against a sovereign state, a violation of international norms and based on an invented pretext," AFP quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as telling reporters.
US President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike on the al-Shayrat air base near Homs, Syria, at 00:40 GMT today. This was in response to what he called a "very brutal attack" by the Syrian government on April 4, suspected of using chemical weapons in Idlib province, Syria, that killed more than 80 people.
"The Syrian army has no chemical weapons," Peskov added. "In fact, the process of destroying the entire chemical weapons stockpile of the Syrian armed forces has been confirmed and documented by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
According to Mr. Peskov, the US action "caused significant damage to Moscow-Washington relations, which were already in a regrettable state."
