"What is happening in Spain is an internal Spanish matter and must be resolved according to Spanish law, based on traditional democratic principles," AFP quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying on October 19 in Sochi.
Mr Putin criticised the West's "hypocrisy" and "inconsistency" in supporting separatist movements in one country but opposing them in another. The Russian president cited the example of Western countries supporting Kosovo's autonomy but opposing Catalonia's secession from Spain.
“Such double standards pose serious risks to the stable development of Europe and other continents,” Putin said.
