Taking full control of Syria's second largest city is considered the biggest victory of the Syrian army since the civil war broke out in 2011.

Syrian government forces have restored "security" in Aleppo after the last rebel fighters were evacuated from the eastern part of the city, the Syrian army said on state television.

Earlier, Syrian state television reported that the last four buses carrying terrorists and their families had arrived in Ramussa, a district in southern Aleppo controlled by government forces. Thus, the Syrian government has taken control of five major cities: Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Damascus and Latakia.

Before the army announced the resounding victory, SANA news agency quoted President Assad as saying: “The recapture of Aleppo is not only a victory for Syria but also for those who have made a real contribution to the fight against terrorism, especially Russia and Iran.”

The Syrian government’s recapture of Aleppo is a major turning point in the Syrian civil war, with potentially huge political ramifications for the country. It would be a major victory for President Bashar al-Assad and the heaviest blow to the Syrian opposition in the six-year conflict that has claimed more than 310,000 lives.
