Chinese military arrives in Syria for first time to fight IS
On December 23, Chinese press quoted Russia's Sputnik news agency as saying that a unit of Chinese special forces had arrived at the port of Tartus to coordinate with Russian marines to participate in the fight against IS in Syria.
The unit was formed from the “Night Tigers” force, which specializes in counter-terrorism operations in Xinjiang, and some members of the “Snow Leopard” assault team of the Armed Police. The unit went to Syria with the aim of eliminating Uyghur extremist terrorists who are joining the ranks of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

Previously, many Uyghur extremist terrorists had been hiding in Turkey for a long time. After the war broke out in Syria, they went to Syria to fight, established the East Turkistan Front, and built a base. These elements are very aggressive, well-equipped, and have become a great threat to the Syrian government army and the Kurdish militia.
The Chinese counter-terrorism unit will work with Syrian government forces and Russian units to eliminate the above elements. Sending troops to fight abroad is a big challenge for the Chinese military. Although the Chinese military has sent troops to participate in UN peacekeeping units in the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, they cannot compare to this high-intensity operation.
