“Both sides need to be good listeners,” The Global Times said, pointing out points of tension between the US-China relationship, including the US’ decision to label China a strategic rival in President Donald Trump’s military strategy.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the military partnership is an important part of the China-US relationship, despite other issues that arise between the two countries.
He said: "I believe that as long as both countries want to meet each other, there is no difficulty that cannot be overcome together."
The US Defense Secretary, who was greeted with a flower basket after his flight to Beijing, expressed his desire to avoid tensions and seek an “open dialogue” at a strategic level during the official meeting in Beijing.
“I want to engage in dialogue immediately without undermining the opponent's argument by discrediting or providing unfavorable information about the opponent, as I have decided,” Mr. Mattis said.
On June 26, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis became the first Pentagon chief to visit China since 2014, starting a three-day visit aimed at enhancing dialogue with Beijing.
