The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed rebel group in Syria, today declared a "historic victory" over the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) militants and completely liberated the city of Raqqa after more than three years of IS control, according to CNN.
Speaking at Raqqa Stadium, SDF spokesman Talal Silo said control of Raqqa would be handed over to civilian leaders once the demining work was complete. "The future of Raqqa will be decided by the people of this city," he said.
He said the SDF was committed to defending Raqqa and called on the international community to support the city’s reconstruction efforts. He also expressed gratitude to all those who fought, were wounded and died in the 130-day battle to drive IS out of its Syrian stronghold.
IS has controlled Raqqa since 2014, using it as a base and often planning attacks abroad. Backed by a US-led international coalition, the SDF launched an offensive against Raqqa in June.
