Cuban National Assembly ratifies agreement to normalize relations with the US

According to AFP, on December 19, the Cuban National Assembly unanimously approved the agreement that Havana reached with Washington on normalizing bilateral relations after half a century of hostility.

The information was published by Prensa Latina news agency after the twice-yearly session of the Cuban National Assembly.

The meeting, chaired by President Raul Castro, focused mainly on discussing the island nation's resumption of relations with the United States.

President Raul Castro is expected to deliver a closing speech at the meeting later that evening, with the participation of a group of five Cuban intelligence officers detained in the US.

The last three of the group were released in a prisoner swap that paved the way for the reestablishment of US-Cuba relations on December 17.

Previously, the main agenda of this closed session was economic issues.
