The National Assembly dismissed Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the position of President.

The 15th National Assembly has carried out the procedure to dismiss Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term.

On the afternoon of January 18, the 15th National Assembly held its third extraordinary session in Hanoi to decide on personnel work under the authority of the National Assembly.

The 3rd extraordinary session of the 15th National Assembly took place on the afternoon of January 18, 2023.

At the session, the National Assembly Standing Committee submitted a proposal to the National Assembly to consider dismissing Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc (Ho Chi Minh City National Assembly Delegation) from the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term and terminating his duties as a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

The delegates conducted a secret ballot to dismiss Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the position of President and from the duties of a National Assembly deputy. With the majority of delegates voting in favor, the National Assembly also passed a Resolution on dismissing Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the duties of a National Assembly deputy and from the above positions.

According to the Constitution, the President holds the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, so when the National Assembly dismisses the position of President, he will naturally cease to hold the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.

Previously, on January 17, based on current regulations of the Party and State and considering the wishes of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Party Central Committee agreed to let Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc cease to hold the positions of Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

The Party Central Committee assessed Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc as a key leader of the Party and State, born into a family with a rich revolutionary tradition; received basic training, matured from the grassroots and was trusted by the Party Central Committee and Politburo of all terms to hold many important leadership positions of the Party and State.

As Prime Minister for the 2016-2021 term, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc made many efforts in leading, directing and operating the work of preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, achieving important results.

However, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc bears political responsibility as a leader when many officials, including 2 Deputy Prime Ministers and 3 Ministers, committed violations and shortcomings, causing very serious consequences; 2 Deputy Prime Ministers asked to resign from their positions, 2 Ministers and many officials were criminally prosecuted.

Fully aware of his responsibility to the Party and the people, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc has submitted a request to resign from his assigned positions, retire from work and retire.

With the majority of National Assembly deputies present in agreement, the 15th National Assembly dismissed Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the position of President.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc was born in 1954 in Que Son district, Quang Nam province. He was a member of the Central Committee of the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th terms; a member of the Politburo of the 11th, 12th, and 13th terms and a delegate of the National Assembly of the 11th, 12th, 14th, and 15th terms.

During his working career, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc has held the following positions: Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province; Deputy Inspector General of the Government; Minister, Head of the Government Office; Deputy Prime Minister; Prime Minister...
