After three days of debate, the draft laws were passed by parliament with 174 lawmakers voting in favor, 10 abstaining and no votes against. Despite being passed, the law has also faced criticism from non-governmental organizations and some civil society organizations in the country for allowing the use of the death penalty. It is known that Tunisia has had a moratorium on the death penalty in this country since 1991.
The counter-terrorism document comes amid growing jihadist threats in Tunisia, particularly after two terrorist attacks on tourist sites that shocked the world. One took place in June in Sousse, killing 38 foreign tourists, and the other in March at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, killing 22 people, including 21 foreign tourists. The terrorist attacks once again exposed weaknesses in Tunisia's security forces.
