(Baonghean.vn) - Implementing the project to restore and develop the Quy duck flock, from 2015 to present, Quy Chau has supported the restoration of the Quy duck flock with an amount of 9 billion VND.

For a long time, Quy gourd duck has been one of the famous specialties originating from Quy Chau district. Quy gourd duck has the characteristics of a large body, short legs, short neck, high disease resistance, adaptable to both hot and cold climates. Quy gourd duck meat is delicious, sweet because it is raised in a free-range manner.

However, due to many reasons, in recent years the specialty of duck from the mountainous region of Quy Chau has tended to fade away.

Faced with that situation, in order to gradually develop a large-scale, highly intensive, clean herd, preserve the gene pool, and restore the original outstanding characteristics of this duck breed, in 2015, the Provincial People's Committee approved the project to Support the restoration and development of the Quy duck herd in Quy Chau district for the period 2015 - 2017, in the communes of Chau Tien, Chau Binh, Chau Hanh, Chau Hoi, Chau Phong, Chau Binh and Tan Lac town.

Ms. Pham Thi Nga in Binh 3 village, Chau Binh commune said: "Previously, to buy a pair of ducks, you had to go to remote villages with a very expensive price of 500,000 VND/pair. This is a rare genetic breed, and Quy ducks are familiar with the climate and soil of Quy Chau area, so in early 2016, the Quy duck herd restoration and development support project supported 1,000 breeding ducks, so I invested in breeding the herd."

Although the ducks from the project were difficult to raise because they were too small, thanks to the application of science and technology in raising ducks, the flock of ducks has developed well. After the first batch, she continued to select healthy ducks with 350 female ducks and 50 male ducks for breeding, the rest were sold for meat. Up to now, the Quy duck flock has entered the 6th batch with very high economic efficiency.

It is known that after the district had a project to preserve, restore and develop the Quy duck flock, Chau Binh commune gave priority to Ms. Pham Thi Nga's family to receive 5% of the land managed by the commune with a total area of 10 hectares to build a duck farm. Ms. Nga said: "At its peak, the farm had up to 3,000 ducks, 400 eggs per day, sold for 3,000 VND/egg, meat ducks cost 200,000 VND each, after deducting investment costs, the family had an average monthly income of 30 - 35 million VND".

"Ms. Nga's household has favorable conditions such as ponds, lakes, and spacious alluvial land, which are very suitable for project implementation, so the commune registered with the district to build a model. After 2 years of investment, the model has actually developed effectively, contributing to the conservation of the Quy Chau duck breed, creating a high source of income. In the coming time, not only focusing on developing the duck flock at Ms. Nga's farm, Chau Binh will replicate this model to households with favorable land conditions throughout the commune to preserve the district's rare genetic resources," added Mr. Kim Van Duyen - Secretary of the Chau Binh Commune Party Committee.

According to the approval decision of the Provincial People's Committee, the goal of the project to support the restoration and development of the Quy duck flock in Quy Chau district is to build an average of 20 concentrated models each year with a scale of 1,000 ducks/batch/year, with a total commercial duck flock of 60,000 ducks; each year build 10 incubators to produce ducklings for breeding, incubating 2 batches/year with 2,000 - 2,500 ducks/batch.

The total cost of the project is 9 billion VND, of which the state budget supports nearly 4 billion VND.
