Quynh Luu: Meeting with the Provincial Committee for Women's Health (Lao PDR)

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of July 2, the People's Committee of Quynh Luu district coordinated with the District Committee for the Advancement of Women to hold a meeting to share experiences with the Committee for the Advancement of Women of Xieng Khouang province, Lao PDR and to review the activities for the advancement of women - gender equality in the first 6 months of the year, and deploy tasks for the last 6 months of 2014. Attending were delegates from Xieng Khouang province, Mr. Vi Van Quynh - Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Nghe An province and leaders of Quynh Luu district.

In recent times, the work of gender equality and women's advancement has been paid attention to by Party committees, authorities and organizations at all levels in Quynh Luu district, implemented well and achieved many results. In particular, the work of planning and training female cadres in various fields has been focused on; the proportion of female cadres holding key positions at district and commune levels has increased; 100% of communes and towns have established and completed the grassroots Committee for the Advancement of Women. Training and propaganda work on gender equality has been focused on. The grassroots Committee for the Advancement of Women has coordinated with departments and branches to organize 21 training courses to improve knowledge of laws and policies related to women and children with over 3,000 participants. New jobs have been created for 1,100 rural workers, of which female workers account for 62%. Community health care in general and women in particular have gradually received attention. The District Committee for the Advancement of Women has piloted the model of "Preventing and minimizing the harmful effects of gender-based violence" in Son Hai commune, thereby contributing to raising awareness and consciousness of gender, gender equality and preventing domestic violence for local people.

At the conference, after receiving opinions and proposed solutions from delegates, the Committee for the Advancement of Women in Quynh Luu District and the Committee for the Advancement of Women in Xieng Khouang Province, Lao PDR shared valuable experiences accumulated during the implementation process of the two units, so that each unit could find the most suitable experiences to serve the work journey in the coming time.

In response to the demands of reality, in order for the activities of the Committee for the Advancement of Women in Quynh Luu District to be more effective, the task for the last 6 months of 2014 is to continue to raise awareness at all levels about gender equality and women's advancement; the Women's Union at all levels needs to continue to promote its role, raise awareness of gender equality among its members; develop specific plans, care for women, educate, and create jobs. Strengthen inspection and supervision of Committees at the grassroots level, organize training courses to foster professional skills and gender mainstreaming in planning and implementing policies on gender equality...
