(Baonghean.vn) -The heavy rain that lasted for the past three days has caused the entire area of vegetable crops belonging to farmers in Quynh Luu district to be deeply submerged in water.
Amidst torrential rain, we visited vegetable-growing communes such as Quynh Luong, Quynh Minh, and Quynh Bang to assess the situation of the winter crops. Upon arriving at the vegetable fields in Quynh Minh commune, we found the entire area of the farmers' crops submerged in water. Despite the heavy rain, many people were busy harvesting their vegetables, hoping to salvage what they could.

Ms. Ho Thi Hien, from Hamlet 4, said: "My family has 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters) of vegetables, including nearly 1 sao of scallions that were sown 5 days ago and more than 1 sao of cabbage that were harvested 7 days ago. But because of the heavy rain that lasted for the past 3 days, the entire area of my family's vegetables has been flooded. The newly harvested scallions are now floating on the water's surface. If it continues to rain, more than 1 sao of cabbage will also be completely waterlogged. The damage is significant."

As for the vegetable fields that are nearing harvest, people are still braving the rain to harvest, accepting lower prices. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a resident of Hamlet 6, said: “My family has more than one sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of green onions that are ready for harvest. If we don't harvest them in time, they will all be waterlogged. This year, green onions are selling for 7-8 thousand dong/kg, so farmers are happy to make a profit, but now that the rain has flooded everything, we have to accept selling them at a low price, whatever we can get is better than nothing.”

The entire Quynh Minh commune has 157 hectares of land for growing vegetables. This winter season, the commune mainly focuses on growing scallions, cabbage, carrots, etc. However, due to heavy rain over the past three days, the entire area of vegetable crops has been flooded. According to statistics, about 90% of the farmers' vegetable crops have been flooded and damaged.

Mr. Ho Dien Huu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Minh commune, said: "Currently, the local authorities are directing agricultural and irrigation officials to go to the fields to assess the situation and develop plans to clear waterways and drain floodwaters in the vegetable fields. For areas where vegetables are ready for harvest, we are instructing farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to harvest and salvage what they can. Approximately 90% of the local vegetable fields have been flooded, causing damage estimated at around 10 billion VND."
Besides Quynh Minh commune, other communes such as Quynh Luong and Quynh Bang are also facing the same situation. Heavy rains over the past few days have caused flooding in many areas. With the weather becoming increasingly complex and heavy rains expected to continue for several more days, farmers in the coastal vegetable-growing areas need to urgently go to the fields to harvest their crops, following the motto "better to harvest while the vegetables are still green than to let them wither in the field."
