Quynh Luu district has 140 hectares of clam farming area concentrated in the communes of Quynh Tho, Quynh Thuan, Son Hai, Quynh Long and An Hoa. Fishermen in coastal communes have taken advantage of the tidal flats along the coast to cultivate clams and earn high incomes.
Mr. Dong Nhu Nguyen, hamlet 8, Son Hai commune said: “My family raises 2.28 hectares of meat clams on the tidal flats in Quynh Tho commune. At this time, taking advantage of the low tide, workers are focusing on harvesting the last layers of clams of the season and cleaning the flats to prepare for the new batch. After Tet, the price of clams is also stable at 15 to 20 thousand/kg, so people are excited to raise them. In 2016, after deducting all expenses, my family earned a profit of 200 million VND from clam farming.”
On average, people cultivate 3 to 4 crops of clams a year, of which the last crop of the year is being harvested. Currently, on the tidal flats, people are harvesting the last batches of clams, cleaning the sandbanks, driving stakes and spreading nets to prepare for the first crop of 2017.
