Due to the impact of recent storms, floodwaters flowing into Ban Ve Hydropower Plant were very large. At its peak on August 30, the amount of water flowing from upstream into Ban Ve Hydropower Plant reservoir was up to 4,200 m3 /S.

The flood swept away many houses and belongings of people upstream of the Nam Non River in some villages: Xieng Tam, Xop Tu, Xang Tren... in My Ly commune, Ky Son district. In addition, the flood swept many large and small trees down into the Ban Ve hydroelectric lake, making this lake look like a giant garbage dump. Some places with the most garbage are the lake section in Huu Khuong commune, Mai Son commune, Nhon Mai... (Tuong Duong)

Mr. Luong Van Bu - a boatman with nearly 10 years of experience on Ban Ve Lake said: Up to now, every time there is a flood, garbage comes with it. The garbage surrounds the lake, making it very difficult to travel. However, there has never been a year when wood and garbage have flown back as much as this year. On normal days, it takes Mr. Bu's boat 80 minutes to travel from the upstream wharf to the center of Huu Khuong commune. At this time, it takes 2 to 3 hours to get there.

As a teacher with many years of experience working in Huu Khuong commune, Mr. Ha Van Huan, a teacher at Huu Khuong primary school, often has to go to school by boat. He said that at this time, he and other boaters on the Nam Non River have had many close calls when their boats hit dry trees floating on the water. During the flood season, teachers have to leave earlier because the boats move slowly due to the many trees stuck on the water.

Mr. Lo Van Tung, Secretary of the Party Committee of Huu Khuong Commune, said that currently, the commune has 4 boats carrying passengers up and down. The boats are quite sturdy and comply with regulations, so they have always been safe.

“Although we know the danger from the garbage spread across the lake, we cannot help but go there, because this is the shortest and only way to reach the Commune People's Committee. For the safety of the people, the commune government and the local police force have coordinated and regularly disseminated information to the people and boat owners when participating in inland waterway traffic. Regarding the problem of too much garbage, the commune has also reported it to the higher authorities through meetings,” said Mr. Tung.
