According to Pakistan Times news agency, the accident happened at Murree resort in Charra Pani village, about 30km north of Islamabad.
Rescuers confirmed that at least 12 people were killed and 2 others were injured in the accident. According to local authorities, the chances of survival for the two people are very slim because the cable car cabin fell from a height of about 120m.
Technical experts will investigate the cause of the accident. A witness named Omair said that strong winds caused the cabin carrying the victims to fly off and fall into the ravine.
It is known that this cable car was installed by local people without permission from relevant authorities. It is used to move from Tret village to Dannah village.
Meanwhile, the victim's family blamed the cable car operator as well as the local government. They took to the streets in protest, blocking the main road in the area, causing traffic jams.
Murree is one of the most popular highland tourist resorts in Pakistan not only among domestic tourists but also among foreign tourists. Accidents involving cable cars are quite common in the highlands of Pakistan as they are considered a means of transport to cross rivers.
