Every day at around 7pm, crab hunters are present in the fields to "hunt" for crabs. They go in groups of 5-7 people, "hunting" very carefully in a certain field, then move to another field the next night. In the photo, Thanh Luong people (Thanh Chuong) go crab hunting at night. Photo: Huy Thu |

Night crab hunting usually does not go far, only hunting in village fields. In addition to tools to catch crabs (buckets, basins, bags, etc.), indispensable items are handheld flashlights or fully charged headlamps. You can even use the light from a mobile phone. Photo: Huy Thu |

Not as difficult as "crab fishing" where you have to wade through deep fields, wading in water above your knees, or digging crab holes until your hands are torn, night crab hunters usually only look for crabs in shallow fields. Because during the day the crabs stay in their holes, at night they leave their holes to look for food in the fields. The hunter shines a light to see the crabs, just needs to "take" a quick, accurate shot before the crabs disappear into the mud or murky water. Photo: Huy Thu |

Crabs caught during night hunting are usually not as big as "stick fishing" crabs, so buyers are more selective, and the price is also lower, only about 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg. Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen (50 years old) in Son Long hamlet, Cong Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) said: "In the hamlet, there are about 50 households that regularly catch crabs to sell, catching both day and night. Each night, they earn about 100,000 VND/person. Catching crabs is a job that does not require capital investment, but only requires going to the fields, working hard, and diligently collecting to be able to earn money". Photo: Huy Thu |
