When looking at his mother Kayne Angeles Naelgas-Castro lying motionless inside the white coffin, 5-year-old Khayne Kheian Naelgas-Castro did not understand why everyone in the family said that his mother had passed away forever and would never wake up.

So poor little Khayne Kheian pulled a chair close to his mother's coffin, stood on it to look at and hug his mother Kayne, who Khayne described as "sleeping" inside the gloomy coffin.

Seeing the scene of the 5-year-old child trying to hug his deceased mother from outside, his family members as well as those attending the funeral could not hold back their tears. More painfully, Khayne Kheian always hovered around the coffin and refused to sleep or eat if he was not near his mother.

According to Buzz Flare, the photos of baby Khayne looking at his mother and trying to hug the coffin were shared by a family member, Marichu Gabriel, whose Facebook account is Chuchubelles Gabrielle, on his personal page on June 26.

Gabriel said Kayne Angeles died after giving birth to her youngest son, Cyril Khayzer, at a local hospital in San Joe, Occidental Mindoro. Khayzer was in poor health after birth and was transferred to a larger hospital. He is now in critical condition, but the family is still hopeful that he will survive.

Marichu Gabriel’s status and the images of little Khayne Kheian lovingly looking at and hugging his late mother’s coffin are being widely shared on social media. Thousands of people hope that the whole family will soon overcome this loss, especially wishing for a miracle to happen to little Khayzer.

The maternal mortality rate in the Philippines is quite high, with 162 deaths per 100,000 births each year. Despite efforts to reduce this by making changes to the health care system, such as requiring pregnant women to give birth in maternity hospitals rather than hiring a midwife to take them home, the number remains high.
