In addition to the decisive header, Ronaldo had several other chances to score but failed. Goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev responded well to Ronaldo's free kick in the 24th minute and his shot from the right wing in the 32nd minute. After the break, from Andre Gomes' cross, CR7 once again missed when his close-range header went wide of the target.
Akinfeev also played well against other Portuguese players. Striker Andre Silva had two chances to score but failed to convert, including a header that was pushed just wide of the goal line.
Akinfeev's fine form almost saved Russia from a heavy defeat. As the home team, the "Bears" disappointed when they failed to create many attacking situations towards the Portuguese goal. The most notable attack Russia created was Fedor Smolov's volley that went wide of the goal at the end of the first half.
Meanwhile, Portugal showed their superior class through coordinated attacks. The reigning European champions also dominated with 60% ball possession.

With their first win of the Confederations Cup, Portugal move to the top of Group A with four points. Russia are second with three points from two games. The hosts could lose their spot if Mexico wins against New Zealand in the late game.
Defeating Russia also opened the way to the semi-finals for Portugal. In the final round, Ronaldo and his teammates only need to beat New Zealand to have a chance to continue as the leader of Group A.
Meanwhile, Russia may have to "fight to the death" with Mexico in the final round of the group stage. If they beat New Zealand to move up to second place, Mexico only needs to draw with the host team in a direct confrontation.
