Ronaldo had a mixed bag against Latvia. The striker opened the scoring with a penalty, then missed another, before completing his double with a scissor kick. With goals from William Carvalho and Bruno Alves, Portugal secured their third straight World Cup qualifying win.
The win over Latvia gave Portugal nine points from four games. Ronaldo and his teammates are now in second place, just three points behind Switzerland.
Portugal’s victory was by a wide margin, but it was not an easy result. Latvia, in fact, caused quite a few problems before succumbing. In the first half, the visitors even had a chance to score through a Tarasovs corner kick. Portugal had 75% possession but could do little to overcome Latvia’s crowded defence.
If not for the penalty in the 28th minute, the first half could have ended 0-0. After Nani fell down after colliding with Freinamis in the Latvian penalty area, the referee decided to award Portugal a free kick. And Ronaldo did not miss the opportunity from the 11m mark.

Latvia (white shirt) caused a lot of trouble for the reigning Euro champions. |
CR7 had another penalty opportunity in the 58th minute, when Kluskins fouled Andre Gomes. But this time, the Portuguese captain's kick hit the post and flew to goalkeeper Vanins.
From being surprised by Ronaldo's missed opportunity, Portuguese fans had to experience fear when witnessing Latvia equalize. In the attack in the 67th minute, Latvia got a goal thanks to Zjuzins' low shot. This was also the first shot on goal of the away team in the match.
Fortunately for Portugal, there was still enough time left for Ronaldo and his teammates to make it 4-1. Just three minutes after being equalized, the home team took the lead when Quaresma crossed for Carvalho to head in from six meters. This was followed by a beautiful scissor kick volley from Ronaldo, also from a Quaresma cross. Ronaldo even had another shot hit the crossbar, before Bruno Alves sealed the 4-1 victory with a header from Raphael Guerreiro's cross.
