It took a last-minute penalty from striker Wayne Rooney for Everton to draw 1-1 at newcomer Brighton.

Everton had a busy summer in the transfer market with many quality contracts. However, that did not make a difference for The Toffees. In fact, they played much worse than last season. After 7 rounds, the Merseyside team only won 7 points and is right next to the red light group.

Coach Ronald Koeman's position is therefore very fragile and the Dutch strategist could completely lose his job if Everton lose in their trip to the field of rookie Brighton.

Entering the match, determined to win, Everton took the initiative to dominate the game and attacked Brighton's goal, but the home team defended well, protecting the goal well.

Both teams played quite solidly in the first 45 minutes.

In addition to their solid defense, Brighton were also particularly dangerous on the counter-attack. However, in the first 45 minutes, neither team could create any real chances. Perhaps that was the situation where the referee overlooked Michael Keane's handball in the penalty area for the away team.

In the second half, the game did not change much. Brighton was the team that played more coherent attack but the opportunities were not successfully exploited. It was not until the 82nd minute that the home team Brighton had a series of threats and Everton's defense was completely disoriented so there was no way to stop it, as a result, Knockaert comfortably finished off Pickford right before the 5m50 line.

It was not until the final minutes of the match that Knockaert brought home the goal to break the deadlock.

It seemed as though Everton would continue to lose, but in the final minute of regulation time, Brighton captain Bruno illegally tackled Calvert-Lewin and the visitors were awarded a penalty. On the 11m mark, veteran striker Wayne Rooney easily fooled goalkeeper Ryan to tie the score 1-1, thereby helping to temporarily secure coach Koeman's seat.

But Rooney managed to bring home 1 point for Everton with a successful penalty kick.

In the later match, Southampton and Newcastle also created an exciting score chase at St. Mary's Stadium. Newcomer Newcastle opened the scoring in the 20th minute after midfielder Isaac Hayden's rebound from outside the box. At the beginning of the second half, striker Manolo Gabbiadini performed solo in Newcastle's penalty area before unleashing a tricky shot to equalize the score.

However, just 87 seconds later, Southampton's defense was careless, allowing Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez to score twice in quick succession to restore the lead for the visitors. In the 75th minute, Gabbiadini completed his double with a successful penalty kick, tying the score at 2-2.
