Researchers warn on Healththat people who are regularly exposed to cleaning solutions are susceptible to respiratory problems.Norwegian scientists have found that people who use household cleaning products for a certain period of time have an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) data mining research teamfollowed over 5,000 women over a period of 20 years. The results showed that those who regularly used cleaning products had a 17% reduction in lung function compared to normal people. Even those who only cleaned the house had a 14% reduction in lung function.
The authors explain that during the cleaning of kitchens, bathrooms, and floors, people are directly exposed to toxic chemicals such as ammonia that cancause respiratory irritation. Other substances such as sodium hypochlorite (a chemical compound commonly used in bleach) and limonene (a fragrance such as orange, grapefruit, and flowers) can increase respiratory allergies. They are one of the culprits that causeChronic obstructive pulmonary disease kills 25,000 people in the UK every year.

Oistein Svanes, the study's lead author, recommends that people should be more aware of the toxicity of the products they use rather than believing advertisements.“Cleaning chemicals can increase the risk of harm to consumers’ health. Therefore, people should be aware of the risks and take positive actions to reduce this risk,” said Professor Jorgen Vestbo, University of Manchester, UK.
