GIGGS WILL LEAVE
Last month, Ryan Giggs publicly stated that there was no disagreement between him and manager David Moyes, contrary to rumors. However, where there's smoke, there's fire, and suspicions of conflict resurfaced yesterday when a number of major English newspapers simultaneously reported that Ryan Giggs will retire at the end of this season and also step down from his coaching position.
Currently, in addition to being a member of the Manchester United squad, Giggs is also a member of the coaching staff, managing the U19 team alongside his former teammate Nicky Butt. However, some sources claim that Giggs feels the current situation at Old Trafford is not suitable for him to develop a coaching career; or in other words, Giggs does not trust the abilities of head coach David Moyes.
Although Giggs is still playing very well in his appearances this season, the Welsh midfielder's retirement at the end of the season is not surprising. He is 41 years old, and manager David Moyes himself has not expressed any desire to keep the veteran in the squad.
However, if Giggs were to leave, it would be a huge shock to Manchester United fans. Ryan Giggs is the greatest icon of the Premier League era, and few doubt that he would spend his life at Old Trafford, continuing as a manager there after retiring.
WHERE IS THE CONTRADICTION?
A particularly noteworthy event, yet little reported, occurred during Manchester United's press conference on March 31st. When an American reporter asked Ryan Giggs if he intended to take over as Manchester United manager should David Moyes leave, the question was deflected by a Manchester United media representative who quickly changed the subject before Giggs could answer. There seems to be some "sensitive" issue regarding the relationship between Ryan Giggs and Manchester United that hasn't been fully revealed at this time.
If we believe the British press, Giggs is distrustful of his coaching career prospects under David Moyes. However, perhaps the simpler reason is that he wants to try his hand at something else? Recently, along with his '92 teammates Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Giggs bought a semi-professional club called Salford City right in the Manchester area.
Historically, it's extremely rare for players to spend their entire careers with one club and then go on to serve that club as a manager. Among top European clubs, only one such case can be cited: legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier of Bayern Munich. Manchester United fans were hoping Giggs would become such a figure, and this departure will undoubtedly leave many feeling disappointed.
