Russia's S-500 Will Neutralize America's Latest Inventions

In creating a missile defense shield, Russia is placing all its trust in the S-500 air defense missile complex, writes the American magazine The National Interest.

Military analyst Sebastien Roblin commented that the S-500, like the US THAAD missile defense system, will apply the concept of "kinetic cyber interception", when using only the kinetic energy of the missile to destroy the target. The flight speed of the Russian missile can be changed, thanks to which the S-500 missile is truly versatile, able to promptly intercept cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, aircraft and perhaps even enemy satellites.

"Due to the S-500's extremely long-range capabilities, it is ideal for use against the largest and most difficult targets to detect. While identifying and destroying bombers at long range is a difficult task, AWACS and electronic warfare aircraft will have to operate outside the S-500's range," writes analyst Sebastien Roblin.

In an interview with Sputnik, Russian military expert Viktor Murakhovski partly agreed with his American colleague: "The S-500 is a promising multifunctional air defense and missile defense system. The complex provides strategic-level missile defense capabilities. That is, the system can protect areas from air strikes, including those of intercontinental ballistic missiles and other means of attack, such as hypersonic aircraft, which are being actively developed in the United States. The S-500 system is capable of defending against certain types of satellites," Murakhovski said. According to the Russian expert, even the little information about the S-500 has caused serious concern in the Pentagon:

"In various documents, representatives of the Pentagon raised concerns that along the Russian borders they are creating impenetrable airspace or restricted access for enemy aircraft. For example, in the Kaliningrad region, the Far East, etc. This is a big disappointment for the Pentagon: they spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the so-called immediate global strike program, developed hypersonic aircraft, cruise missiles. And it turned out that all these inventions were ineffective. Taking into account that the S-500 is a purely defensive system, and the United States unilaterally withdrew from the ABM Treaty, it is understandable why the United States began to worry," — said the Russian military expert.
