Chapter one introduces the scientific and systematic position and role of Vietnam's seas and islands in the country's economy, defense, and security. Chapter two presents the legal basis for determining Vietnam's maritime zones and continental shelf according to international conventions. Vietnam has actively participated in and contributed to the process and results of the codification of the new international Law of the Sea at the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, while also gradually enacting measures to manage the country's maritime zones and continental shelf. Furthermore, this section clarifies the scope and legal status of Vietnam's maritime zones and continental shelf.
Chapter 3 of the book specifically outlines the process of establishing and exercising Vietnam's sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly Islands from the Nguyen and Tay Son dynasties to the periods of resistance against the French and Americans, as well as the era of national construction, reform, and integration. Through this, it affirms that Vietnam was the first state in history to possess and exercise sovereignty over the Paracel Islands, at least since the 17th century. This possession and exercise of sovereignty has been continuous, peaceful, and consistent with the principles of international law and practice. The final chapter addresses the current situation and solutions surrounding the South China Sea dispute.
The book also includes an appendix listing official Vietnamese government documents on maritime zones and the continental shelf; research papers on the East Sea... In addition, with numerous images and diagrams, the book provides readers with a comprehensive and easily understandable overview of the topic of seas and islands.
