Kansai International Airport is a structure built on an artificial island in the middle of Osaka Bay, Japan, according to Science Channel. The wing-shaped airport terminal is the longest building in the world. It has a total of 41 gates, welcomes millions of passengers each year and operates continuously 24 hours a day.
To build an airport terminal in an area prone to strong earthquakes, architects had to overcome some major design challenges. The building includes a system of many mechanical joints that are capable of withstanding the large impact forces from earthquakes.
