Tan Son Nhat Airport experiences disruptions due to air traffic control interference.

On the morning of June 16th, Tan Son Nhat air traffic control experienced operational disruptions due to interference. Many flights were unable to land at the airport.

Speaking to VnExpress, a leader of the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation said that from 6:47 to 7:05 a.m. on June 16, the Tan Son Nhat air traffic control tower experienced interference on all channels due to an unknown signal source. This incident disrupted air traffic control operations.

"We have contacted the Radio Frequency Management Agency to investigate the source of the signal. Initial assessment indicates that this is a relatively strong signal, covering the operating frequencies of the air traffic control tower," said the head of the air traffic control agency.

According to the head of the Air Traffic Management Corporation, during the period of signal interference, there were 6 long-haul aircraft approaching and 3 flights preparing to land in the Tan Son Nhat airspace. Air traffic control requested these aircraft to circle in a holding pattern, with one flight having to divert to another landing site.

The incident caused Jetstar Pacific flight BL591 from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, scheduled to land at Tan Son Nhat Airport at 8:30 AM, to be diverted to Buon Ma Thuot Airport. The plane then took off again at 9:10 AM and landed at Tan Son Nhat Airport at 10:05 AM. This incident also caused a chain reaction of delays for Jetstar flights that day.

According to a Jetstar representative, in the event of an air traffic control incident, aircraft at the airport must temporarily suspend takeoffs, and aircraft preparing to land must circle or land at another alternate airport depending on fuel levels and the pilot's decision.

In November 2014, Tan Son Nhat Air Traffic Control Tower experienced a power outage due to a fire in the UPS system, disrupting flight operations and affecting dozens of flights.
