In October 1947, the 12th International Meteorological Conference held in Washington, USA decided to change the name of the International Meteorological Organization to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and on March 23, 1950, the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) came into effect; thereby contributing to promoting international cooperation in the field of meteorology to reduce risks caused by natural disasters.

Since 1961, the World Meteorological Organization has chosen March 23 every year to celebrate World Meteorological Day. This is not only the day of entry into force of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 but also an occasion to honor the contributions of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to the protection of human life and property.

An annual tradition, “World Meteorological Day” focuses on a central theme that is chosen and promoted worldwide. The theme for 2018 is: “Weather-ready, climate-smart”.
