Daniel Nocera, a chemist in the US, has created an "artificial leaf," a device capable of mimicking the photosynthesis process of plants. He claims his invention could power the entire world, ABC News reports.

Nocera's artificial leaf is a waterproof silicon membrane coated with catalysts capable of producing hydrogen and oxygen gas from water and sunlight.

"In general, it mimics the photosynthetic response of plants," Nocera said.

To generate electricity from artificial leaves, users immerse them in water and expose them to sunlight. The hydrogen and oxygen gases they produce rise to the surface of the water as bubbles. These two gases are then fed into fuel cells to generate electricity.

Statistics show that more than 1.6 billion people worldwide lack access to electricity, and 2.6 billion people lack access to clean fuels for cooking.

"With my artificial leaves, you only need water and sunlight to produce electricity without needing a power grid. It's a solution for generating electricity for the poor," Nocera said.

According to Nocera's calculations, one only needs a bottle of water and sunlight to generate electricity for a small house. However, the price of artificial leaves is quite high, posing a significant problem for the poor. Nocera hopes to reduce the price of the product by decreasing manufacturing costs in further research.
