Forest tree seed production in Con Cuong

(Baonghean) - Con Cuong district has nearly 154,600 hectares of forest and forestry land, accounting for 88.91% of the total natural land area. Currently, Chi Khe Seedling Cooperative provides quality seedlings to local people and creates more jobs for many local workers.

Coming to the nursery garden of Australian acacia and many other forestry trees on more than 1 hectare of Chi Khe Seedling Cooperative in Tien Thanh village, Chi Khe commune, Con Cuong district, workers here are carrying out the steps from preparing the land, packing, sowing seeds, watering... for seedlings.

Since the beginning of 2015, the cooperative has sold 1 million seedlings and is preparing to grow another 600 thousand seedlings to provide enough for people to develop production.

The average income of the cooperative's workers is 4 million/month. In the photo, cMs. Nguyen Thi Huong in Tien Thanh village, Chi Khe commune (Con Cuong) said: "Before, my job was unstable, but now I can work at the cooperative with a monthly salary, so my family's life is much better."

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, the head of the cooperative, said: In 1999, the European Community's UEC project supported the reforestation of barren hills in Con Cuong district, building a nursery model to provide quality seedlings for people in the commune. He participated in building the model effectively, providing many plant varieties for people. After the project ended, realizing the benefits of the forest, he maintained the nursery to provide seedlings for people in the district.

Currently, Chi Khe Seedling Cooperative supplies trees including meter, acacia, sua, lat, black canarium and fruit trees to the market including Con Cuong, Tuong Duong, Ky Son districts. On average, each seedling is sold to farmers for 500 - 1,000 VND/tree.

The cooperative also called on people in the surrounding area to contribute capital and labor to build nurseries, thanks to which, some families gradually escaped poverty through that connection.

Mr. NNguyen Ngoc Trung, Head of the Cooperative, checks and takes care of the newly planted seeds.

Mr. Ho Dang Tai, Vice Chairman of Con Cuong District People's Committee said: "Con Cuong has 13 communes and towns, of which 10 communes are in extremely difficult areas that enjoy the Government's 135 policy. All communes and towns plant forests and earn their main income from forests. The establishment of Chi Khe Seedling Cooperative is very suitable and necessary, a good model that needs to be multiplied in mountainous districts."

As one of the first collective economic models in the mountainous district of Con Cuong, Chi Khe Seedling Cooperative is effectively exploiting the potential of the area, contributing with the government and people to increase the forest coverage rate to the highest in the whole province at 78%.
