North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper today (October 20) called on people to make more efforts in raising rabbits for meat as the country faces severe food shortages.

African swine flu and unstable weather have made food shortages in North Korea worse.

According to Yonhap, after pointing out that the output at some rabbit farms was not as expected, the Rodong Sinmun wrote that farmers should make every effort and remember that raising rabbits depends entirely on them.

The newspaper calls for scientific and hygienic rabbit farming.

The promotion of rabbit farming comes after the UN Food and Agriculture Organization predicted that the food situation in North Korea would worsen in the fourth quarter after Typhoon Lingling hit the country last month and the African swine fever epidemic that has spread across the country since it broke out in May.

The North Korean government has long promoted rabbit farming, arguing that the animals are easy to raise because they eat little and can also provide meat and fur.
