(Baonghean.vn) - Over the past half century, the student movement and the Vietnam Student Association have made outstanding contributions and grown remarkably through revolutionary historical periods, becoming the pride of today's student generation.

During the period 1925-1945,Enlightened by comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc, patriotic student organizations were born one after another, such as: Student Union, Ngo Quyen Team, General Student Association, which led the student movement under the banner of the Party and beloved Uncle Ho. The pride of generations of students is the establishment of the first Party cell, the establishment and unification of the Indochinese Communist Party, Annam Communist Party and Indochinese Communist Federation and the Youth Union cells, the Communist Youth Union, most of which were comrades from students, such as: Tran Phu, Ngo Gia Tu, Nguyen Duc Canh, Trinh Dinh Cuu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Ly Tu Trong...

January 28, 1941,Leader Nguyen Ai Quoc secretly returned to the country to directly lead the Vietnamese revolutionary movement with the Party Central Committee. Under the direct guidance of the Party, the movement to form the General Student Association operated openly to unite patriotic students who sympathized with the revolution. Along with the development of the student movement, the student movement in high schools in the North and the South also grew stronger and stronger under the influence of the common struggle guided by the Viet Minh Front and the National Salvation Organizations.

After the August Revolution, students enthusiastically studied, trained and participated in the resistance war against the French colonialists, actively carrying out three major tasks: Eradicating illiteracy, eradicating hunger, and eradicating foreign invaders as set forth by Uncle Ho and the Government.

From 1947 to 1949,In Saigon, Hue, and Hanoi, the Resistance Student Association was established, and the Resistance Student Union later expanded to many schools in the North, Central, and South; the number of students admitted to the Union and the Party was quite large. The activities of the resistance students became increasingly rich and diverse. With the slogan: "Actively hold out, prepare to switch to a general counterattack", it added new vitality to the student movement. The student struggle spread throughout Indochina.

November 9, 1949,Hue students went on strike. Phan Van Giao, the puppet governor of Central Vietnam, used brutal terror. Students decided to go on strike in protest.

November 22, 1949While the struggle in Hue was taking place, Saigon students secretly campaigned to commemorate the anniversary of the Southern Uprising and initiated a response to protest the arrest of Hue female students, while demanding reform of educational policies.

November 25, 1949,Chu Van An students decided to go on strike, and slogans were plastered on the walls of classrooms. The whole school resounded with slogans like “students on strike”, “give back freedom to our friends”, and “down with the puppets”.

During the years 1949-1950,The struggle movement of youth, students and pupils in urban areas took place continuously, vigorously and widely, especially in Saigon-Gia Dinh. On January 9, 1950, the National Salvation Youth Union and the Saigon-Gia Dinh-Cho Lon Student Union organized and mobilized over 10,000 people, most of whom were students, to take to the streets.

Tran Van On - a young man who represented patriotism and the indomitable fighting spirit of students, after bravely enduring the shoving and batons to protect younger students, was shot. He died at 3:30 p.m. on January 9, 1950, when he was not yet 19 years old.

With that historical event, following the example and recognizing the indomitable fighting spirit of Mr. Tran Van On and students in the early days of the resistance war, the first National Congress of the Vietnam Youth Federation in February 1950 in Viet Bac decided to take January 9 every year as the Traditional Day of Students.

The 5th National Congress of the Vietnam Students' Association (November 22-23, 1993) in Hanoi decided to simultaneously take January 9 as the Traditional Day of the Vietnam Students' Association.

Through more than half a century of construction and development, Vietnamese students have the right to be proud that in any circumstances, Vietnamese students always continue and promote the glorious traditions of previous generations; and have been diligently nurtured by the Party and State.

Today, through their activities, students contribute to educating and nurturing a new generation of students who are "both red and specialized"; have solid and rich knowledge, are able to access the wisdom of the times, are passionate about the ideals of national independence and socialism, have great ambitions, a beautiful lifestyle, have traditional strength and national identity, have a high sense of responsibility to the community, consolidate and widely develop the Vietnam Student Association, gather and unite a large number of students to compete in studying and training, contributing to promoting the cause of industrialization, modernization and firmly protecting the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
