Newcastle caused a major upset by thrashing Manchester United 3-0 last night, marking the Red Devils' second consecutive defeat and giving Manchester City a significant three-point lead in the title race.

Of Newcastle's three goals, one was scored by Vietnamese-born star Yohan Cabaye, who is currently being pursued by Manchester United. Another was an own goal by Manchester United defender Phil Jones, and the remaining goal was scored by Demba Ba.

In the opening goal, following a long ball from goalkeeper Tim Krul, the ball went through Ameobi and then Ba, who unleashed a volley to beat Anders Lindegaard, who was favored by Sir Alex Ferguson over De Gea.

Early in the second half, Cabaye executed a perfect free-kick to seal a deserved victory for the home side at St James Park, before Jones capped off a disappointing night for the visitors with an own goal header at the end of the match.

As for MU, the clearest chance the Red Devils had was a shot from Rooney, who had just been punished by Sir Alex in the 2-3 defeat to Blackburn a few days earlier, but was blocked by an opposing defender.

Previously, MU always knew how to prove their mettle in the New Year's marathon. But this time, they played extremely poorly, and consecutive defeats against Blackburn and Newcastle are a red alarm bell for Sir Alex's team.

In another match played early this morning, Bolton moved away from bottom of the table after coming from behind to beat Everton 2-1 thanks to a winning goal from Gary Cahill, who is about to move to Chelsea.
