NASA says that in the US, viewers can best observe Mars without a telescope around midnight. This is the time when the red planet is brightest and has a slightly reddish color.
NASA also said that if you miss this year's observation opportunity, the next time Earth and Mars will come close to each other will be on July 31, 2018, at a distance of 35.8 million miles.
According to NASA, the closest distance in the past 60 thousand years between the two planets occurred in August 2003, with a distance of 34.65 million miles (equivalent to 55.76 million km).
Scientists have calculated that it will take until August 28, 2287 for the two planets to get that close again.
