Da Dang Hydropower Tunnel Collapse: Drilling concrete, pumping oxygen into the tunnel
At 7:00 a.m. on December 16, at the construction site of the Da Dang - Da Chomo hydroelectric dam, in Pang Tieng village, Lat commune, Lac Duong district, Lam Dong province, a water tunnel collapsed, trapping 11 people.
Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee directly directed rescue work
The accident occurred when workers were erecting an iron arch to pour concrete in the tunnel when suddenly the outer tunnel collapsed. According to a representative of Song Da 505 Joint Stock Company - the construction unit, the number of people trapped inside the tunnel may be 12, instead of 11 as initially reported, including a female worker. The collapsed tunnel section is determined to be about 300m from the tunnel entrance and the collapsed section is estimated to be about 10m long.
Immediately after the incident, Mr. Doan Van Viet, Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, was present at the scene, directly directing the authorities to deploy rescue plans. Currently, the rescue team is trying to drill the collapsed site, pump oxygen into the tunnel, then continue to dig and remove the buried soil and rock to gradually approach the victims.
Rescue work is being carried out very urgently.
Mr. Doan Van Viet said: “In terms of experience in dealing with situations like this, this is the first time it has happened in Lam Dong, so we have to discuss and agree on a solution. We have agreed on a number of solutions, first of all, to provide air for those workers, then use other measures to bring them to safety. Everyone is being very responsible and urgent, we hope that with such determination we will effectively resolve this accident.”
As of 3pm today, there has been no information regarding the victims trapped in the hydroelectric tunnel. Authorities have not been able to reach the victims.
The Da Dang – Da Chomo hydropower project has a total capacity of 22 MW, with a total investment of more than 475 billion VND in the form of BOO (build – own – operate). This is a hydropower project with two interconnected factories: Da Dang hydropower plant located on the Da Dang river, in Lat commune, Lac Duong district and Da Chomo hydropower plant on Da Chomo stream, a branch of the Da Dang river, in Phi To commune, Lam Ha, Lam Dong province.
