The horrific landslide in Tra Leng and Tra Van communes (Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province) on the evening of October 28 buried 53 people. By 11pm, 7 bodies had been found.

The landslide occurred on the evening of October 28 in Nam Tra My district, in two villages: village 1, Tra Leng commune and village 1, Tra Van commune.

In village 1, Tra Leng commune, a landslide buried 45 people, 4 people were lucky to escape. In village 1, Tra Van commune, 8 people were buried.

According to the newspaperQuang Nam, the latest information at 11pm the same day was that 7 bodies had been found.

The forward search and rescue command post in Bac Tra My, commanded by Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Tri Thanh, was established.

At a meeting with leaders of the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security, and Military Region 5 on the night of October 28 at the headquarters of the Quang Nam Provincial Military Command, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung assigned tasks to each individual involved in commanding the rescue work of the horrific landslide in Quang Nam.

“This is an extremely serious incident that has buried many people,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, although landslides due to prolonged rain and floods in mountainous areas can be predicted, these incidents are clearly still very difficult to predict. When storms come, we can proactively respond, but landslides are very difficult, not only in Quang Nam but also in other localities.

“The road to search and rescue is very difficult. We must concentrate forces, equipment, and logistics command with the motto of 'four on-site' to carry out this task,” Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung directed local leaders and rescue forces.

Late that night, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed an official dispatch on rescuing victims buried in Tra Leng commune, Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province.

The Prime Minister requested the National Committee for Natural Disaster Response and Search and Rescue, the Minister of National Defense, the Commander of Military Region 5, and the People's Committee of Quang Nam province to coordinate with relevant forces to focus on all necessary measures to urgently rescue those buried.

The storm caused heavy rain and gusts of wind, causing many trees to fall, hundreds of houses and structures to have their roofs blown off... The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned of particularly large floods along the Luu Gia - Thu Bon river, raising the warning to level 4, forecast to be 0.4 m above the historical flood level.
