Murderer of Binh Phuoc massacre asks for early death penalty

Nguyen Hai Duong, the murderer who murdered his lover's entire family out of hatred for love, has asked for an early death sentence, saying that "his crime has been clearly shown in the record."

On April 4, lawyer Do Hai Binh (Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association) said that his client Nguyen Hai Duong (25 years old) had submitted a petition to have his death sentence carried out early.

Mr. Binh is the lawyer appointed by the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City to defend Duong's rights at the appeal trial. To prepare for this trial, last weekend, the lawyer went to the detention center of Binh Phuoc Provincial Police to meet Duong to collect more information.

"Duong said that his crimes were clearly shown in the records so he did not provide anything more. He also said that on March 30, he submitted a request for an early execution of the death sentence to the police," lawyer Binh revealed.

Faced with his client's lack of cooperation, the lawyer encouraged and advised Duong to stay calm because he still had to attend the appeal hearing.

The High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to bring the case to the appeal trial in May. Previously, the court planned to hear the appeal on March 21, but for some reasons it had to be postponed.

According to the first instance verdict, Duong and Nguyen Thi Anh Linh (22 years old, daughter of Mr. Le Van My in Chon Thanh district, Binh Phuoc) used to be in love. In April 2015, Linh said goodbye. Duong thought that she had rejected him, so he hated her and had the intention to kill his ex-lover's entire family in revenge.

Duong bought many weapons such as electric guns, pellet guns, zip ties, knives, masks, gloves, etc. and then invited Tran Dinh Thoai (28 years old, living in Vinh Long) to join. In the early morning of July 4, 2015, these two young men went to Mr. My's house but could not commit the crime so they left.

After that, Thoai saw that Duong's plan killed too many people so he stopped participating but still bought more knives for the murderer.

In the early morning of July 7, 2015, Duong invited Vu Van Tien (25 years old, living in Binh Phuoc) to break into Mr. My's house. There, Tien strangled the victims so that Duong could directly use a knife to kill 6 people in Mr. My's family.

On December 17, 2015, the People's Court of Binh Phuoc Province sentenced Duong and Tien to death, and Thoai to 16 years in prison for murder and robbery. After the trial, Tien and Thoai appealed for a lighter sentence. The victim's family also filed a petition to raise Thoai's sentence and consider criminal responsibility for Duong's aunt, who kept the backpack containing the weapon for many days and lent him her motorbike to commit the crime.
