4 months after his controversial statement, Tung Duong: 'I can also sing Bolero'
Vietnamese music divo unexpectedly sang "Two Christmas Seasons" in Bolero style at the Christmas concert taking place on the evening of December 24 in Hanoi.
The In the Spotlight series ended 2017 with a Christmas concert themed Imagine, taking place on the evening of December 24 at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace in Hanoi. The auditorium was not filled, but the appeal of Trong Tan, Tan Minh, Tung Duong and Uyen Linh was enough to make many audiences in the capital choose to listen to music instead of joining the crowd of people going out for Christmas.

The music night opened with an impressive collaboration between three of Vietnam's top tenors - Trong Tan, Tan Minh and Tung Duong - in the famous chamber song O Sole Mio.
Although it was the first time they sang together, the harmony and mutual support of the artists made the audience applaud non-stop. This was probably the most impressive performance of the program.
Imagine introduces famous Christmas songs and classic world medleys. In addition, singers will also bring familiar love songs to the audience by musicians such as Do Nhuan, Pham Duy, Vu Thanh An...
In it, Tung Duong performed O holy night, Have yourself a Merry Christmas and two familiar songs Gui nguoi em gai, Se ve thu do. During the music night, the "Vietnamese music divo" also unexpectedly sang a line from Hai mua Noel in Bolero style.
The male singer honestly said that many people wondered if he could sing Bolero, and his spontaneous moment with Two Christmases was the answer. However, Two Christmases - a famous composition by musician Dai Phuong Trang - is not a Bolero song.
Tung Duong wears "angel" wings on stage. |
Previously, at the end of August, Tung Duong caused controversy with his statement "The fact that young and old are passionate about Bolero is truly a step backward". According to the singer of Con Co, Bolero music only has nostalgic and sentimental value but does not bring creativity or development to the music industry.
Tung Duong's opinion stirred up public opinion for a while. Many artists who specialize in Bolero music strongly opposed Tung Duong's statement. But there were also opinions that agreed with Tung Duong and said that Bolero music was being commercialized and over-exploded.
Aside from the somewhat "off-key" improvisation, Tung Duong had the most outstanding performance in the Imagine concert. The songs were arranged in Jazz style, which was considered an advantage, a platform for the male singer to easily sublimate on stage. At times, it felt like this concert belonged to Tung Duong.
In the performances with Tan Minh and Trong Tan - two seniors in the profession - Tung Duong also did not show any inferiority. The male singer also showed off his sense of humor when jokingly sharing that he and his two seniors have the same height. However, Trong Tan and Tan Minh are slightly "better" in appearance.
With the Christmas concert, Trong Tan and Tan Minh performed their roles well. Tan Minh still gently sang the familiar songs Noi long nguoi di and Buon oi chao mi. Meanwhile, Trong Tan impressed with Bai hymn buon, and Coat mua dong with his unmistakable voice.
Uyen Linh sang a duet with Trong Tan for the first time. |
Uyen Linh's appearance was considered the highlight of the show. The female singer impressed with the English songs All I want for Christmas is you or My grown up Christmas list. However, the way Uyen Linh was placed in the show was a bit confusing. The female singer was introduced as a guest singer but sang quite a lot.
The fact that Uyen Linh only sang a duet with Trong Tan instead of collaborating with other singers like Tan Minh and Tung Duong was not necessarily a reasonable choice. It is not difficult to see that when singing in harmony, Trong Tan had to hide himself and restrain himself to support Uyen Linh on stage.
Imagine follows the "principle" of In the spotlight, which is to honor music. There, stage tricks are limited, only music and vocals are sublimated. A Tan Minh who is elegant and graceful in every note, a Trong Tan who is both generous, dignified, and romantic, combined with the transformation of Tung Duong, created unforgettable emotions in the audience.
But the tone of Imagine is quite sad. The way the songs are arranged makes the concert have some gloomy moments, lacking the necessary excitement. For many audiences, a show on Christmas Eve, there is no need to cry like that...
