After negotiations, Trump suddenly announced to impose tariffs on 300 billion USD of Chinese goods

"Trade talks are continuing, and during the talks the United States will start imposing an additional tariff of 10% on another $300 billion worth of goods and products coming from China into our country, starting September 1st. This does not include the $250 billion of Chinese goods already taxed at 25%," US President Donald Trump tweeted on August 1.

Trump’s announcement came just a day after US and Chinese negotiators ended two days of talks in Shanghai with little sign of progress, although both sides described the talks as constructive. Another round of talks is scheduled for September.

In a series of subsequent Twitter posts, Trump also criticized China for failing to buy more US agricultural products as promised and personally criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping for not doing more to stop the sale of the opioid painkiller fentatyl to the US.

"We thought we had a deal with China three months ago, but sadly, China decided to renegotiate the deal just before signing," the US President wrote.

The US-China trade war, with tit-for-tat tariffs, has caused difficulties for the world's two largest economies, disrupted global supply chains and roiled financial markets. After meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan at the end of June, US and Chinese leaders agreed to a "ceasefire" to resume negotiations.

Trump on July 30 criticized China for deliberately delaying the trade deal and always wanting to change the deal at the last minute right after the two countries resumed negotiations. The US President warned that if he is re-elected, the deal China reaches will be much more difficult, or there will be no deal at all.
