After more than a year of continuously hitting rock bottom, causing farmers to struggle with losses, chicken egg prices in Nghe An have increased sharply in recent days, reaching the highest level in many years. Farmers are starting to make a profit, but authorities are advising people not to rush to restock to avoid risks when the market fluctuates.

According to a survey, over the past month, the price of local chicken eggs in Nghe An market has increased sharply, ranging from 2,800 - 5,000 VND/egg, depending on the type.

At traditional markets, hill chicken eggs are sold for 4,000 - 4,500 VND/egg, local chicken eggs are 3,500 - 3,700 VND/egg, industrial chicken eggs are 3,000 - 3,500 VND/egg; on average, all have increased by 1,000 - 1,300 VND/egg compared to last month.

Many traders said this was the strongest increase in many years, within just one week, the price of eggs increased by 7,000 - 10,000 VND/dozen.

On the morning of August 11, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (Vinh Loc ward) went to the market to buy food and was surprised when the price of eggs increased from 28,000 VND/dozen to 40,000 VND/dozen. The price of eggs from free-range chickens and quails was even higher, at 45,000 - 50,000 VND/dozen.

Not only in traditional markets, but also in supermarkets, egg prices are also newly listed: 10-egg basket of local chicken eggs for 55,500 VND, Dabaco Omega3 eggs for 57,600 VND/box of 10, DHA eggs for 59,400 VND/box of 10...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, a trader at Dung market (Dai Dong commune) confirmed that this is the strongest price increase in many years. "Chicken eggs started to increase in mid-July, but in the past week they have increased sharply, 2.5 times higher than before," Ms. Huyen said.

With this price, many egg-laying farms have started to make a good profit, escaping the long-term loss. Mr. Tran Son (Nghia Hung commune), owner of a VietGAP-standard egg-laying farm with a scale of 15,000 eggs, said that he harvests 10,000 - 11,000 eggs per day, selling them for 2,900 - 3,200 VND/egg. "This is the highest level in the past 2 years, and it is a rare time since mid-2024 that we have made a profit again," said Mr. Son.

In An Chau commune, there are nearly 200 farms specializing in raising laying hens and commercial chickens, with a total herd of about 1 million chickens/year, bringing tens of thousands of eggs to the market every day. At this time, the price of chicken meat and chicken eggs has increased, helping to relieve the pressure of farmers after many months of losses.

Just a few months ago, the picture was completely opposite. From 2024 to the end of June 2025, chicken egg prices dropped to an unprecedented low, with traders buying for only 1,300 - 1,600 VND/egg, causing farmers to lose millions of VND every day. Chicken meat prices also plummeted from 60,000 VND/kg to 42,000 VND/kg.

While broiler chickens can be sold early to “cut losses”, egg-laying chickens are forced to maintain their flocks, leading to prolonged losses. Mr. Le Van Giang, owner of a chicken farm with more than 5,000 chickens in An Chau commune, recalled: “Last March and April, each egg was sold for only 1,400 - 1,600 VND, each day I lost 1 - 2 million VND. Unable to survive, I had to sell about 2,000 chickens to reduce costs.”

According to the agricultural sector, this sharp price increase stems from many reasons: entering the production season of moon cakes and Tet confectionery, causing increased demand for eggs; the outbreak of African swine fever has caused consumers to seek chicken eggs as a substitute food; stormy weather and extreme heat have caused many farms to be flooded or chickens to die, reducing egg-laying productivity...

In addition, after a long period of rock bottom prices, many chicken farms have cut their flocks, even abandoned their coops, and have not yet restocked, leading to a decrease in supply.

Although the increase in chicken and egg prices has helped farmers make up for some of their losses, the agricultural sector recommends that farmers do not rush to expand their herds. Farmers need to base their decisions on market demand, closely monitor the disease situation, and avoid risks when prices reverse.
