How to detoxify the body after Tet?

Before we enthusiastically start "detoxifying" our bodies, let's decode some common mistakes below with experts.

1. Say no to colon cleansing

A colon cleanse may not seem like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, but if it helps your body detox and kick-starts your journey to health, then surely it's worth a try?

Not at all.

Although purging “believers” will argue that a clogged colon will cause toxins to leak back into the body, doctors have little evidence to support the idea that a colon cleanse can “cleanse” the intestines of toxins. They even say it can pose a risk of bowel perforation.

2. Detox smoothie

Smoothies are gaining a reputation for their detoxifying powers and are a great way to get your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. While the latter may be true, the former is debatable.

“You can’t force your body to ‘detox’ by cutting out specific foods and drinking fruit and vegetable juices at mealtimes,” says nutritionist Emma Brown.

And about the so-called “toxins”, she added: “If our bodies accumulate “toxins”, we will feel extremely unwell.

3. Detox tea

Detox teas have been getting a lot of hype this year, thanks in part to the widespread coverage of reality TV stars tagging different tea brands on their Instagram accounts.

Tea is said to aid weight loss and have the ability to “detoxify” the body. But questions remain about whether “health” teas actually work.

In an article for Health.com, nutritionist Cynthia Sass points out that many teas recommend using them in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise – which we already know helps with weight loss. Sass also notes that “detox teas can also have a laxative effect, causing the body to eliminate waste from the digestive tract,” which can make your stomach appear flatter, but doesn’t actually contribute to fat loss.

4. Coconut water

This drink has moved beyond its original place on the beaches and become a staple in many families' refrigerators.

Coconut water is low in calories, low in fat, and packed with nutrients your body needs. It’s also great for rehydrating – hence its popularity with gym-goers.

Although low in calories, the calories in coconut water come mainly from sugar. Natural coconut water will have 1 teaspoon of sugar for every 100ml of water.

So how does the body actually detoxify?

Your body is already doing it for you. If we need more detoxification, let's get it from medical professionals, not from "idols."

A healthy liver and kidneys will detoxify your blood, remove impurities, and keep your body clean. If everything is working properly, there is no need to supplement with questionable “detox” products.

How to be healthy in the new year?

If you want to stay healthy after a particularly strenuous Tet holiday, all you need to do is eat a healthy, balanced diet, rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, and exercise regularly. Experts recommend that the average adult should exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

If you smoke – quit, or at least cut down on cigarettes, and reduce your alcohol intake.

That's right - no need for teas, cleanses or magical "superfoods" - healthy foods and regular exercise are the best way to detox your body./.
