Washington and Seoul will not conduct their annual large-scale joint military exercises, Foal Eagle and Key Resolve, two unnamed US defense officials said today. The US and South Korean militaries will make an announcement in the coming days,Reutersreport
The two exercises are expected to be replaced by smaller-scale training sessions that do not require combined forces from multiple military branches. US officials confirmed that the decision to cancel the exercises was agreed upon in advance and was unrelated to the outcome of the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi on February 27 and 28.
"The Pentagon is studying solutions to organize a series of exercises to maintain combat readiness. Modern technology allows training in a virtual environment, without requiring thousands of soldiers to appear on the training ground," a US official revealed.
The Key Resolve exercise is held every March for two weeks, running parallel to the month-long Foal Eagle exercise. They are designed to deter North Korea from taking military action, as well as refine operational scenarios and test the combat capabilities of US and South Korean forces.
Last year, the US and South Korea also postponed a series of major exercises, including the Ulchi Freedom Guardian and Vigilant Ace air exercises, but continued to conduct smaller-scale joint training activities to maintain combat readiness.
